China Prepares for High-Level Trump Visit
(MENAFN) China is set to host US President Donald Trump for a rare official visit, marking the first time in nearly nine years that a sitting American president has traveled to the country, as major geopolitical and economic issues dominate the agenda.
Trump is expected to arrive in Beijing before heading to his hotel ahead of formal meetings scheduled at the Great Hall of the People. The summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping is planned for Thursday morning local time, according to reports.
The US delegation includes senior officials such as Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who previously held trade talks with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng in South Korea ahead of the summit.
Rubio’s participation is notable given that he was previously sanctioned by China in 2020 during his time as a US senator, though Beijing has clarified that those measures were tied to his earlier political activities.
According to reports, the agenda is expected to cover a wide range of sensitive issues, including the Middle East conflict, Taiwan, trade disputes, tariffs, and competition in advanced technology sectors.
Trump has indicated he plans to raise issues related to US arms sales to Taiwan as well as the case of Hong Kong media tycoon Jimmy Lai, who is currently imprisoned.
Beijing has stated that discussions will focus on broader themes including bilateral relations, global stability, and international development priorities.
The two leaders are expected to hold multiple engagements during the visit as both sides seek to manage tensions and explore areas of potential cooperation.
