US Combats Forced Labor in China

(MENAFN) The United States government has broadened its list of restricted imports from China in a move to curb the entry of products allegedly linked to "forced labor," according to an official announcement made on Tuesday.

The decision adds further scrutiny to goods originating from China that are suspected to be mined, assembled, or created through exploitative labor conditions.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has identified steel, copper, lithium, caustic soda, and red dates as new high-priority sectors for enforcement under the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act.

This legislation aims to block items associated with "forced labor" from being imported into the US, particularly referring to practices involving the Uyghur Muslim minority in China's northwest region.

Kristi Noem, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, stated, “America has a moral, economic, and national security duty to eradicate threats that endanger our nation’s prosperity, including unfair trade practices that disadvantage the American people and stifle our economic growth. The Trump administration is taking action.”

She further stressed the administration's determination to confront human rights violations, saying, “The use of slave labor is repulsive and we will hold Chinese companies accountable for abuses and eliminate threats its forced labor practices pose to our prosperity.”

The DHS underlined that confronting exploitative labor practices is vital for both the nation's economy and its security.

The agency highlighted the long-standing legal stance against such practices, noting, "For almost 100 years, US law has prohibited the importation of goods mined, produced or manufactured in whole or in part with forced labor, recognizing not only the humanitarian concerns of allowing parties to profit from the suffering of others, but the threat to domestic producers competing with foreign goods produced at an unfair advantage."

This latest action reflects a continued effort by US authorities to push back against labor violations while also aiming to protect American industry from unjust global competition.
